Working with the University of the Philippines and local authorities to understand nutrient pollution and water quality in the largest lake in the Philippines:

Our Executive Director (Dr. Byran Fuhrmann) evaluated and presented on ongoing research on nutrient sources to the lake, with recommendations for cost-effective approaches to monitor and improve water quality.

  • This lake (Laguna de Bay) is 225,000 acres with a volume of almost 600 BILLION gallons.

  • Laguna de Bay is situated next to Manila, providing drinking water for the community and supporting a fishery that is vital for the locals.

  • It provides jobs for 13,000 fishermen that harvest more than 200 million pounds of fish every year, providing a substantial source of food and income for the community.

  • Excess nutrients have caused harmful algae blooms (HABs), resulting in fish kills, loss of income, and threats to human health.

Continued work on this vital resource

Clean Water Help is working with Laguna Lake Development Authority and the University of Philippines to develop:

  1. A predictive model for HABs to guide measures to protect local health and the fishery

  2. An inventory and mass balance of nutrient loads from the tributaries and sediment to identify key sources and management priorities

  3. A water quality criteria model to determine the nutrient reduction required

  4. An assessment of cost-effective solutions to remove nutrients from tributaries and reduce input to the lake with the goal of improving water quality and preventing HABs
